Why do you run?

Movement is one of the greatest joys in my life.

Describe your best marathon memory.

Bursting into tears after crossing the finish line of my first full. Everyone gives advice of what to do from the starting line through 26.2. Why didn’t anyone warn me about what could happen at the finish? I was overwhelmed with emotion.

Why do you pace?

It’s serious fun. I take great care with the responsibility but I love the comradery and positive energy of running with a group that’s pushing toward a common goal.

Tell us your best pacing experience.

At Seaside Heights, New Jersey, one year it was raining sideways, terrible headwinds, etc. A woman approached me at the start and said her PR was 1:42, that she’d never been under 1:40, and that she was going to stick with me, the 1:40 pacer, wire to wire. She did just that, gutting it out through miserable conditions and finishing as the second overall female. It was a very inspiring performance.

Why should someone run in your pace group?

Relentless consistency! I cut every mile, mentally, into quarters, so I hope to run as evenly as possible even within miles. I’ve also paced more than 40 races, so experience breeds confidence that we’ll reach our target time. You’re in good hands!

Any tips for runners about to join your group?

We need to run the course and not our watches! Our GPS timers may beep early or late, but we must judge ourselves against the mile markers, so don’t panic if watches seem off. I generally call out our cumulative goal pace and our actual pace as we pass each mile marker so everyone is clear on how we’re trending.
