Describe your best marathon memory.
|
On the morning of a marathon in Utah, I boarded a bus at 3:00 a.m. to reach the mountaintop where the race would begin. We arrived nearly three hours before the start, and with time to spare, I decided to pursue a personal mission I had while visiting Utah: to learn more about Mormonism.
I began asking people at the start area if they were Mormon. Most politely declined to talk, but one woman, Kennedy, smiled from ear to ear and said, "Yes."
What followed was an incredible conversation. For an hour and a half, I asked questions and listened as she shared her faith, experiences, and beliefs. I approached the discussion with genuine curiosity and an open mind, and she responded with warmth and honesty.
As we talked, the sun began to rise over the mountains. Standing 7,000 feet above sea level, watching the first light of day spread across the landscape, it struck me that despite our differences in religion, we shared something deeper in that moment: gratitude. We were both simply blessed to be there, witnessing the beauty of the morning and the opportunity before us. |

Why do you pace?
|
I pace because it combines two things I love most about running: community and helping others succeed. Running has given me so much, from personal growth to lifelong friendships, and pacing allows me to give back. There's nothing more rewarding than encouraging runners through tough moments and helping them achieve goals they've worked hard for. Being part of someone's success story is incredibly special, and that's what motivates me to keep pacing. |

As a traveler, I often paced races far from my hometown. For a long time, I trained mostly on my own, building a reputation as a pacer in different states, but I had never paced a race in Charlotte. That changed when I had the opportunity to serve as the 2:00 half marathon pacer for my hometown's most iconic race.
The experience was unforgettable. I was surrounded by friends running alongside me and cheering from the sidelines. My brother, who is also my running coach, ran with me and witnessed the impact I had on the runners I paced. For perhaps the first time, I could see how proud he was of me. Seeing veteran pacers impressed by my energy, and runners who had never met me place their trust in me to guide them to their goal, meant the world—especially in the city I call home.
That race showed me that pacing is about more than hitting a target time. It's about building community, creating meaningful connections, and giving back. Pacing in Charlotte reminded me how much I wanted to invest in the running community that helped shape me and give back to the city where my running journey began. |

Why should someone run in your pace group?
|
Someone should join my pace group if they want a pacer who will be their biggest supporter from start to finish. I don't stop talking when I pace—my goal is to be your hype person, coach, and steady guide throughout the race. I'll encourage you through the tough moments, celebrate the good ones, and keep you focused on the goal ahead. I love interacting with runners, spectators, and the energy of the course. I'll be handing out high-fives, getting the crowd involved, and even convincing spectators to cheer you on when you need it most. I feed off the energy of the people around me, and I strive to create an experience that is motivating, memorable, and fun. I also come prepared. I study every course and develop a pacing strategy based on factors like weather, elevation, crowd support, and key points along the route. When I'm your pacer, you're getting more than someone holding a sign—you're getting someone who genuinely cares about helping you reach your goal safely, confidently, and with a smile on your face. |
